It is so unfortunate that I will begin this post with mentioning something that is bitter. Depression kills. It is sad that it does kill, but what is sadder is the fact despite it being curable, people die of it! However much you feel like you are never going to get out of that dark shadow, depression can be terminated. There are various approaches you can kill depression before it kills you. It all depends on which one works for you best. Below are ways to help you deal with and cure depression.
How to deal with depression
Learn more about your depression
It is crucial to determine the cause of the depression first. Are the symptoms due to an underlying medical condition? Let it be treated first. Also, consider the severity of the condition so that you know the intensity of treatment you require.
Talk it out
Consider a person whom you can confide with. One who can pull you up instead of pressing you down. Don’t keep this negative energy all housed in your little soul, share your frustrations with somebody who can listen up. If possible, talk professionals such as therapists, psychologists, and doctors. They are better placed to advise on the treatment options right for you—whether medications, counseling, therapies or lifestyle changes. This way, you won’t feel like the whole burden is on your shoulders alone. Avoid a friend who brushes it off with “it will just pass” statement without being with you as it passes. Avoid the one who tells you your problem is just a shred of theirs.
Distract yourself from the norm
Routines can be boring and monotonous. They can be worse when one is depressed. To break out of such a condition, why can’t you take a tour to some place you have always admired? Visit the beach. Soak it your feet in the sand and let it tickle your toes. Watch the sunrise and sun set at the sea shore. Look at how the golden rays are reflected on the blue waters and get soaked in that relaxing and refreshing feeling. With a sigh of relief, exclaim at how God has blessed you to be alive. Indulge and immerse yourself in the beauty of a park nearby. Watch, listen, touch and smell nature in the park. These walks act as distractions to your condition, and with time you will end up appreciating every single aspect of life, hence avoiding too many worries and thinking about your condition.
Be open to little experimentation and change
You might not land on the best treatment at first. You may start with an antidepressant, and as it times goes by, you notice that enough exercise is all you need to beat depression. You may otherwise opt for therapy sessions, whereby looking for the best therapists may take some time. This, therefore, requires you to be open-minded as you approach the issue. Otherwise, disappointments might set in if the treatments you try at first do not work as you expect.
Adopt lifestyle changes
Eat healthily. Have good and enough sleep. Exercise regularly. And above all, love life. You can kill depression before it kills you. It is something you can do. It is something that anyone who loves themselves can do. Love yourself and don’t let depression kill you. Kill it first!…
